Mock up of my Digipak.

The image which will be used for my Digipak and Advert.

I have selected this image as my background, as I feel that it suits the genre perfectly.  I have previously researched specifically on the genre Indie. I have found out that simplicity is the best option, Therefore the image that I have chosen is situated below. This image will flow throughout my four panels and will appear on my advert.

Overview of 'Do's and Don't' of Design Work.

DONT

Make the artists name smaller than the album name.

Cover the artists face with text.

Stretch images, therefore you may make your artist look smaller or bigger than they originally are

DO

Add barcode, production company and all other important details.

Use appropriate images which relate to your genre.

Use clear font

Short -list of fonts, colours, layout and design ideas.

Layout

The layout of my digipak will consist of 4 panels. I have decided to use a simple photo of trees which is shown within the song You Got The Love. The simplicity helps to relate to other indie covers as they try to keep the cover as simple as possible.

Font

I have tested out a small majority of fonts, just to see if I can find the perfect one. I was going to settle for Georgia-Bold, but then I came across a beautiful font called Imprint MT Shadow. Here is a photo to show what this font looks like.

Colours

I was going to use black, but realised it made people become familiar with the genre Rock, as my background image is very dark. Therefore, I chose the complete opposite colour which is white. As it contrasts the image in the background but also adds a girly touch.

Design Ideas

I am thinking to add this image to the background and place throughout all of the panels.

Analysis of three Advertisements.

Biffy Clyro

As we can clearly see from the images below, both of the album cover and advertisement use the same image. The genre of this bank is indie. Which is the same as my song. They have used a simple and effective image which helps fans to instantly recognise that this is Biffy Clyro.

I have also found two indie bands who have used these simple, effective images on their advertisement and album cover. These images below show this.

Plan B

Florence and the Machine

Anayalsis of Sequence from Rough Cut and how we improved it throughout the Final Video.

Within our rough cut, we had a very time consuming clip which consists of Grace going slightly mad. In order for our video to look fast, include match cuts and suit the beat perfectly. We decided to change it, by adding different clips of her face.

Anaylis of Different Digipaks.

Although we have now finished our music video, we now have to develop a digipak and advert for an album. In order for me to create a digipak I personally feel that I would benefit from looking at exsiting artists and see how their digipaks have been developed.
Rihanna - Loud

Even though this image is very small, this digipak cover relates alot to Rihanna's music video's and her image. As her bright red hair appears throughout all her videos. The bright purples and red which appear in this photo also help to relate to her music. As she is famously known for being situated within the pop genre. Here is a video of her lastest video. These colours appear continuously throughout the video.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream

This album cover also relates to Katy Perrys video 'California Gurls' as this photo is simply a screen shot from her music video. Also I feel that the colours and text show an obvious sign that is genre is pop. Here is a video to show that her album cover relates to her songs.

Ellie Goulding - Bright Lights

These gold dots which appear on her album cover also appear in a small majority of her videos. I also feel that the colours relate to her second name. As her name is Goulding the use of gold dots create a strong link between the artist and her album cover. Here is a video which displays these gold dots.

Feedback from our Final Edit.

We have kindly recieved positive feedback which is excellent. Many of people have noticed how our main characters have played an excellent role and how their performance suited the song perfectly. Others have mentioned how our difficult and fast match cuts were placed perfectly over the beat. Overall I personally feel that our music video was very successful, and that our hard work definitely paid off.

Research - Analysis of Advertisments

Florence and The Machine Advertisement
The advertisement uses the same image as the Florence and The Machine album cover and creates a link between the two. This makes it easier for people to recognise the album, as well as showing what the advert is advertising. The font used on the advert is also the same as the font used on the album cover, and has a very simple and clear layout. This advert relates to my genre and audience because it has a photo of Florence posing in a typical indie female artist way.

Laura Marling Advertisement
This advertisement for Laura Marling uses the same image as her album cover to create a link between the advert and her album. The advert uses very few colours and is mainly in black and white. The font used on the advert is also the same font as the one on her album, and uses a very simple layout which goes well with the photo. This advert relates to my genre and audience because the photo of Laura Marling shows her posing in a typical indie way, making no eye contact with her audience and dressed in indie styled clothes.

Ellie Goulding Advertisement
This advertisement for Eliie Goulding's album uses the same image as the one on her album, and creates a strong link between the two. Her music videos and album cover use this glowing effect in them, which is also carried onto the advertising. This advertisement relates to my genre and audience because of the photo of Ellie Goulding facing away from the camera with her hands in hair, which is a very typical pose for female indie musicians.

Research - Analysis of Digipaks

Oasis Digipak

The Oasis digipak has 6 panels, and the design clearly shows what genre it is. The acoustic guitar on the front shows that it is indie-rock, and the choice of organic colours help to create a indie theme around the digipak. The digipak uses two types of fonts, one for the main text (track listing, CD title, volume number etc.) and a more distinctive font for the band name. The digipak uses various photos of the guitar from different angles on each panel, and follows all of the digipak conventions. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because of the colour schemes associated with indie, and the guitar that is a well known instrument in indie music.

Angela Easterling Digipak

The Engela Easterling digipak has 4 panels, and follows the conventions of a digipak. The front cover has a clear image of the artist and uses a style of font that looks very old and 'hippie'. Although the digipak uses many colours, it works well, because the washed out colours suit the newspaper/magazine layout on the inside. The digipak only uses two fonts and, has played about with the text a lot on the outside and inside covers (rotating, different sizes etc.). The digipak has also used a pocket for the CD to be pulled out from rather than a plastic case, which helps to show the graphics that would of been hidden behind the CD. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because it uses the type of fonts associated with Indie, and has a very clear photo of the artist wearing indie styled clothes with a guitar in her hand.

Corrine Riley Rae Digipak

The Corrine Riley Rae digipak has 4 panels, and is more modern looking indie digipak. The digipak uses the same font for the main text on the front and back, and has used two photos that have been edited to bring out the bright colours from the background. The pose of the artist on the front is very typical of female indie artists such as 'Florence and the machine'. The digipak follows all of the conventions of a digipak and has used photography very well in representing the genre. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because the photo on the front shows a typical female indie pose and uses very organic colours.

Production - Analysis of one sequence from the Rough Cut

Sequence: Repeating of 'You got the love' (1.22-130)

This sequence in our music video was the build up to the main part of the song, and we chose to use signs/objects to write 'you got the love'. I think that using signs/objects to illustrate the song worked, because it created a link to the shot of the sky and the faces at the start. The shot of the girl holding the signs could of been shot in a better lit location, and the camera angle for the leaves could of been done from a higher angle to show them more clearly. The shot of the girl dancing in between the clips of the signs was also a bit random, and we decided to remove it and found another way of writing 'you got the love'.

Production - Rough Cut Feedback

After showing our rough cut to our teacher, we were told to:
- cut our clips more precisley and on the beat
- film new footage for the ending rather than using the same clip twice
- find a way to shorten the clip of the girl singing at the end
- find another way of writing 'you got the love' to fill in the gap

As a group, we began planning on what to do next and came up with:
- editing the cuts between shots again
- using a close up of the girl's lips saying 'you got the love' to fill the gap
- using different shot types/angles of the girl singing to stop one clip going on for too long
- filming the boy walking and holding hands with the girl instead of repeating footage

Research - Analysis of 3 advertisements that realte to our genre

The advertisement uses the same image as the Florence and The Machine album cover and creates a link between the two. This makes it easier for the audience to recognise the album, as well as showing what the advert is about. The font used on the advert and the album cover is the same, and has a very simple and clear layout. This advert relates to our genre and audience because it has a photo of Florence posing in a typical indie female artist way.

This advertisement for Jack Johnson uses the same image as his album cover to create a link between the advert and her album. The advert uses very few colours and is mainly in black and and yellow. The font used on the advert is also the same font as the one on his album, and uses a very simple layout which goes well with the photo. This advert relates to my genre and audience because the photo of of the tree relates to the genre as indie being peacful and the image of him self near the tree with a guiter.

This advertisement for Eliie Goulding's album uses the same image as the one on her album, and creates a strong link between the two. Her music videos and album covers aswell as posters all use this glowing effect and sparkles in them. This advertisement relates to my genre and audience because of the photo of Ellie Goulding facing away from the camera and hair blowing which is a very typical pose for indie genres.

Research - Analysis of 3 digipaks that relate to our genre

The Au Revoir Simone digipak has 6 panels, and follows the conventions of a digipak. The front cover is very simple and has a clear image of a tree which gives us the idea of a 'hippie'genre which is indie. Throughout the digipak the style is shown similar the use of blue background and blurred images of branches and flowers. The digipak uses two types of fonts only. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because it uses the type of fonts associated with Indie clear and simple, and has a very clear photo of the type of music it might be.

The Oasis digipak has 6 panels, and the looking at the design clearly shows what genre it is. The guitar on the front tells the audience it is indie-rock, and the use of colours help to create a indie theme around the digipak. This digipak uses two types of fonts aswell, agan keeping it simple and effective, one for the main text (track listing, CD title, volume number etc.) and a more distinctive font for the band name. The digipak uses various photos of the guitar from different angles on as it flows on each panel, and follows all of the digipak conventions. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because of the colour schemes associated with indie, and the guitar that is a well known instrument in indie music.

The Corrine Riley Rae digipak has 4 panels, and is a more of a modern look. The digipak uses the same font for the main text on the front and back, and has used two photos that have been edited to bring out the bright colours from the background. Using backgrounds of trees and leaves makes it much easier for the audience to understand the genre of the music. This digipak relates to our genre and audience because the photo on the front shows a typical female indie pose and uses very organic colours.

Production - Analysis of one sequence from rough cut

This sequence in our music video is the main part of the song as it shows the chorus. we showed this by using signs as you can see on the left hand side a girl holding up a sign saying you, we also showed this through objects as you can see on the right leaves gathered up reading love. we could of improved these shots by using better light while filming because you can see shadows behind the girl and using a better shot so our audience can see better becasue its quite hard to read what the leaves are saying as its in an angle. we aslo removed many shots as some were a bit random and changed some around so it doesnt feel as if we were repeating the same thing .

Production - rough cut feedback

After our teacher saw our rough cut we were told to :

cut our clips more precisley and on the beat
- film new footage for the ending rather than using the same clip twice
- find a way to shorten the clip of the girl singing at the end
- find another way of writing 'you got the love' to fill in the gap

as a group we beagan planning to improve on our music video:

- editing the cuts between shots again
- using a close up of the girl's lips saying 'you got the love' to fill the gap
- using different shot types/angles of the girl singing to stop one clip going on for too long
- filming the boy walking and holding hands with the girl instead of repeating footage

Planning - Final song choice

We chose this song as it hasn't got a video to it which makes it quite easy for us to film as we dont have to worry about it being similar to the original music video. Our video is an illustration/disjuncture, this is becasue we think it will go well with the beat of the music and our story line.

Our Final Song Choice.

To our advantage, the song that we want to cover doesn't have an original video. Therefore we wont be breaking any copyright rules. Our final song choice is 'The XX ft Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love'. We have chosen this song as hardly anyone in our group wants to perform or create a strong narrative. Having this in mind, we are going to create a song which isn't relevant to the lyrics. By adding random shots and experimenting with the beat appeals us.
