Analysing previous work.

I have chosen to analyse the group who chose The Kooks - Naive, As I feel that their choice of genre, mise en scene and editing was excellent. The way that the male was situated in a dark room playing a guitar shows that the song is indie/rock. The narrative was very clear as he was continously singing the song throughout the music video. Also the boy and girl situation related to the lyrics, which worked really well. I find it amazing that she was able to do the editing and filming all by herself. As you can see the hard work payed off as her video was very effective.

A2 Video

Shots which I personally like throughout the video.

Vladimir Propp.

Vladimir Propps was a Russian man who mainly analysed the real meaning behind Russian folk tales. He create a theory which was based on old folk fairy tales. Everyone loves a happy ending, therefore they became highly predictable. His theory just explained the different stages of these fairy tales and how they are vaguely similar throughout different stories.

I have chosen Beyonce - Kissing you, as not only is the song about love and romance, this is also reflected through the music video. Vladimir theory is also about love and how a typical fairy tale portrays this, this is shown throughout this music video.

Research- review of previous students videos

I really enjoyed the music video.....
The genre of this music video was indie/rock and the narrative linked in with the video as it told a story and there was a sense of a journey which in this case would be the girl cheating on her boyfriend. She was represented in a way ....

In relation to Andrew Goodwins theory i would say that this music video was an illustration as the lyrics went with the music video.

Planning- lip synnch tutorial experience

Through this activity i learnt how to edit videos and soundtrack the easy way for lip synching so it looks more realistic I also learnt and found challenging that when filming the video we should sing out loud instead of mimimg so when we watch the video it looks more profesional.

Research- illustration, amplification and disjuncture

Illustration
Beyonce 'if i were a boy'is an example of a music video that follows the relation illustraion because the video tells the story of the lyrics.

Amplification
N-dubz 'papa if you can hear me' is an example of a music video that follows the realation amplification because the video introduces new meanings.

Disjuncture
Jay Sean 'do you remember' is an example of a music video taht follows the realation disjuncture because there is little connection betweent he video and the lyrics. All we mostly see is people dancing.

Research-Andrew Goodwins Theory

Main Points

  • Pop videos are built around songs
  • The Pop video uses the singer both as narrator and as a character.
  • The singer/s looks directly at the camera to keep that involvment with the viewer at home with their performances.
  • Pop videos rely on repetition
  • Pop songs builds to a climax or to a constant repetition before fading away
  • There are three types of relations between the songs and videos: illustration, amplification and disjuncture
  •
Illustration- where the video tells the story of the lyrics and dance is used to express the moods of the songs.
Amplification- occurs when the video introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but adds layers of meanings.
Disjuncture- this is where there is little connection between the lyric and the video or where the video conradicts the lyric.

                Research - Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Summary of the main points of Andrew Goodwin's theory

                Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. they are;

                • A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
                • A relationship between the music and the visuals with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
                • Genre-related style and iconography present
                • Multiple close-ups of the main artists or vocalist
                • Voyeruism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females
                • Intertextual references to other media texts may be present
He say that music videos ae often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between those in the video, and close-ups of the artists gives them representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video's attractiveness, particulary to males, whilst intertextualiy is often employed in humorous videos. Many of these features are present in all music videos depending on the genre of the song and the aim of the record company/artist.

Research - Analysis of a music video

Analysis of a music video of your own choice or one studied in class, focusing on the four key concepts of narrative, genre, media language and representation

                Monday, 27 September 2010

Research - analysis of a music video

The music video i analysed is 'cross my heart'by Skepta ft Preyya Kalidas, while focssing on these concepts, narrative, gere, media language and representation.

Narrative- The narrative of this music video is not really clear as its not really telling a story and there isnt a sense of journey becasue we just see Skepta coming out of the car going into a house and sitting down and rapping into the camera as preeya just sings while dancing in a bedroom. The central artist, Skepta's position in the music video would have to be the narator and the lyrics are unconnected to the narrative.

Genre- The genre of this music video is hip-hop and is clearly typically shown as its set in a big mansion and we see the flashy car and ofcourse the half naked women around Skepta and the singer Preeya herslef.

                Media Language-

Representation- Skepta is represented the mascular one, the one the girls want as he has almost everything. we see him throughout the whole video as he is the central artist but also we see Preeya as being quite central aswel but is shown obviously a more feminin way but also as an item a guy wants.

                Planning - Lip Synch Photos

                Lip Synch Tutorial video

During our Lip Sync tutorial we learnt how to match our scenes to the music, also how to cut scenes to the beat of the song. While filming our video, we used various amounts of shots such as medium, close up shots which were shot at different angles. After filming, we then used final cut pro to edit our shots. We decided to cut the clips according to the beat.

                Disjuncture, Illustration and Amplification.

Before making a music video there are three main aspects that directors have to consider. These three main aspects are called disjuncture, illustration and amplification.

                Disjuncture

Disjuncture is when lyrics within a song have a small similarity to the video. The music video that I have chosen which relates to Disjuncture is Biffy Clyro - God and Satan. I have chosen this song is because of the fact that he is talking about religion and little glimps of this is shown within his video. As there is a small ceremony going on within the video which could be related to religion.

                Illustration
Illustration is when the lyrics to a song relate to the video alot. It relates so much that the roleplay within the video links to the lyrics, like a story is being told. I have chosen
this video as I feel that the lyrics are being played out by a couple.

                Amplification

I have chosen Two Door Cinema Club as the lyrics have nothing to do with the music video. This is called amplification. The fact that the band are laying on a black background and are just playing their instruments, shows that it doesn't relate to the lyrics.

                N-Dubz - Ouch - Out Now

Research - Amplification, Illustration & Disjuncture

Examples of Amplification, Illustration & Disjuncture

                Amplification:
The video 'Cleaning out my closet' by Eminem is a Amplification, because the video gives the audience an exaggerated image of the lyrics. The song is about how Eminem hates his mother, and it is expressed in the video by Eminem burrying her.

                Illustration:
The video 'I need you tonight' by Professor Green is an Illustration, because the video relates to the lyrics. At the start of the song there is a converstation between him and a girl, and it is shown in the video using a split screen.

                Disjuncture:
The video 'Don't let me go' by David Guetta & The Egg is a Disjuncture, because there is no connection between the lyrics and the actual video. The song is about Love and the video is of people dancing in the streets.

                Research - Andrew Goodwin Theory

Main Points of Andrew Goodwin's Theory
                • The traditional narrative does not apply to pop videos
                • Pop videos are built around songs
                • The Pop video uses the singer both as the narrator and as a character
                • The singer in a Pop video often looks directly at the camera to connect with the viewers
                • Pop videos often repeat images the same way the song repeats the chorus
                • Videos provide visual pleasure that encourages repeat viewings
                • Pop videos can sometimes promote other commodities like films
                • There are 3 types of relations between songs and videos. (Illustration, Amplifications and Disjuncture)
                • Pop videos use easily recognisable features
                • Females are presented as objects of male desire

Research - Analysis of Music Video

                Griminal - Supa Dupa

I will be analysing 'Supa Dupa' by Griminal, focusing on the 4 key concepts; narrative, genre, media language and representation.

Narrative: The music video does not really have a clear narrative but at the start of the video there is a shot of a car being driven around in a warehouse, with Griminal getting out and then performing the song.
Genre: The genre of the song is Hip-Hop and is clearly shown by the mise en scene. Griminal the main artist is shown driving a sports car at the start and is dressed in clothes associated with Hip-Hop i.e. Hats, Hoodies, Trainers etc. The women in the video are also typically dressed for a Hip-Hop video wearing very few clothes to show off their figure. The video looks very 'flashy' and constantly shows off the car, the women and the main artist which is what Hip-Hop is all about, 'Showing off your money, cars, girls' etc.

                Media Language:
Representation: Throughout the whole video, the main artist 'Griminal' is in pretty much every shot and is always the center of attention. He is put across to the audience as a rapper who has the money, the girls and the nice sports car. The men in the video are represented as the dominant sex who can have and do what ever they want, whereas the women are shown dancing in a cage like their only there for the entertainment of the men.

                Andrew Goodwin's Theory.

                Andrew Goodwin was Director of Music and Organist. Seeing as he has worked with music for most of his life. He decided to make a Theory which involves how narrative, illustration, amplification and disjuncture apply to pop videos. The main theory points that he focused on were ;

                • Pop videos rely on repition

                • Pop videos revolve around the son

                • The narrative is also the character within the video

                • The singer will eventually look in to the camera while singing to form a strong connection with their chosen audience

                • The video does not have a strong ending

                • Pop videos have recognisable features

                • The video provides visual pleasure which helps the audience to want to watch the video again and listen to the song again.

                Analysis of a Music Video.

For my analysis, I am going to concentrate on the video Holiday by Dizzee Rascal. As a class we looked at this video as it portrayed main aspects of R'n'B as a genre.

                Narrative
The narrative is strong throughout this video, as Dizzee Rascal is singing to the camera. The title of the video 'Holiday' is definitely reflected throughout the video. As the sun is shining down throughout their little pool party. The use of women in bikinis, men in shorts and the fact that they are positioned around a pool shows that they have centered the video around the title. This shows a strong narrative. Also as I mentioned above Dizzee Rascal is continuously singing to the camera and talking about a female throughout his lyrics. This women is also continuously shown throughout the video and is also shown with Dizzee himself.
                Genre
I would personally say that the genre of this song would be R'n'B. As we all know money is a main essential to create an R'n'B video. The use of a hummer at the end of the video, the jewelry that Dizzee is wearing and also the house that they are in shows that it basically is centered around money. The use of women instantly tells the audience that R'n'B song. The fact that they are prancing around in little bikinis is a sign of sex.
                Representation
"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, leasure in looking has been split bewtween active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects is fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"
As I mentioned above the use of women throughout this video is typical. The fact that only half of their bodies are shown throughout the video shows that they are only their for show. Legs, Bum and upper body is only shown, not their whole body. However, Dizzee whole body has been shot throughout the video. Especially his upper body. This shows how important representation is. As the male is the most important person throughout the video.
