Planning - Final song choice

We chose this song as it hasn't got a video to it which makes it quite easy for us to film as we dont have to worry about it being similar to the original music video. Our video is an illustration/disjuncture, this is becasue we think it will go well with the beat of the music and our story line.

Our Final Song Choice.

To our advantage, the song that we want to cover doesn't have an original video. Therefore we wont be breaking any copyright rules. Our final song choice is 'The XX ft Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love'. We have chosen this song as hardly anyone in our group wants to perform or create a strong narrative. Having this in mind, we are going to create a song which isn't relevant to the lyrics. By adding random shots and experimenting with the beat appeals us.

My Target Audience.

Elizabeth Lily would be a typical member of the audience for our chosen song 'You got the love - The XX Ft Florence and the machine'. The reason for this is simply because she has very go with the flow attitude towards life. She shops in Iceland and Primark which shows that she dosent care about what others think, as she is a student who earns a very low income.

Research - Review of previous student work

I thought that this groups work to 'Nas - The world is yours' was very good. The choice of mise en scene suited the song very well, and they used all the conventions of a Hip-Hop music video i.e. the DJ decks, the graffiti on the wall, city scape in the backgrond etc. The performers confidence also really helped to portray the typical rapper persona. The black and white filter made the video seem 'old skool' which is exactly what the song would be classified as under Hip-Hop. Overall, I think that this group have produced an exellent music video.

Planning - Final Song Choice

As a group, we chose to use 'You got the love by The XX Ft Florence and the machine' for our music video.
We chose this song because the remix hasn't got a video, and we could imagine the kind of video it would have. We thought that a illustration/disjuncture type of video would go well with the beat because it is very snappy and definate.

Planning - Shortlist of potential songs

Here are four potential songs for our music video:

Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love (Original)

The XX ft Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love

Florence and the Machine - Howl

The Saturdays - Missing You

Planning - Shortlist of Potential Songs

Short list of potiential songs.

In our group we came up with four possible songs that we would create our music video around.

They were;
  • Florence and the Machne - You Got The Love (Original)
  • The Saturdays - Missing You
  • Florence and the Machine - Howl
  • The XX ft Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love (Cover Version)
We decided on these short list of songs because we believed we could come up with a creative video. We wanted some up beat songs and also songs that had emotion in it. We did not chose our short list by selecting types of genres, instead we just chose songs by narrowing it down to certain artists. We also selected our short list of songs on the bases of who we had sent clearance letters too.

Research - Analysis of Previous Student Videos

Review one of the previous student videos that you analysed in class.

I watched video number 24 in class. This was my favourite video because it was a simple video but the editing was precise. The audience for this video was aimed at teenagers and young adults because it is an up-beat song. The targeted audience would be attracted to this video because it is unique and unusual. I would say the genre of this song is dance/pop. The narrative of this particular video was amplified and linear. In the video they focued on the colour red. The colour red helps to connote love, which is what the song is about. They use a pleasureful effect to create the focus of the colour red. Everything in the background was grey except for the features that they wanted to stand out - which they made red. They used the pleasureful effct on her lips, shoes and in the writting amplifing love. I think this video was successful and well edited.

Research - Vladimir Propp

Who was Vladimir Propp? Find out who he was and apply his theory to music video you have seen.

Vladimir Propp was a Russian man who analysed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. His passion for happy endings meant that they became quite predictable. His theory helped to explained the different narrative stages of these fairy tales and how they follow a similar structure throughout other fairy tales.

I have chosen Beyonce - Irreplaceable. This song is about love, romance and break-ups, this is reflected through the music video. This video is relevant to Vladimir theory because he talks about love and romance.

The XX ft Florence and the Machine - You got the love.

I am a student of A level Media Studies and for my Advanced Portfolio I will be working in a group to produce promotional packages for the release of a new album track. I would like to request permission to use the above track for this project.

The finished project will not be available publidly and will be used solely for coursework purposes. The holder of the original copyright will be fully acknowledged in the finished project.

If you do not hold the rights for this song I should be grateful if you could forward this request to the appropriate person, or return it to me with the contyact details in order that I might approach the copyright holder directly.

Yours Faithfully,

Nicola Cronin

Research - Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Propp born in 1895 was a Russian Literary Critic. He came up with the theory that most stories had a structure which contained a normal/neutral beginning, a problem/situation in the middle, and a resolved/happy ending.

A music video which follows this theory of Vladimir's is 'Unfailthful' by Rihanna, because the video has a normal beginning, a problem in the middle and a resolution in the end. It begins with a scene of her and her boyfriend having a normal day out together, then her meeting up with another man, and finally returning back to her boyfriend.

Planning - Lip Synch Tutorial

Before our group began filming for our lip synching video, we had to learn the skills needed in Final Cut Pro to put our video together. We learnt how to synch the footage up with the soundtrack, cutting on the beat of the soundtrack, and cutting inbetween shots. We had a practice at using these skills with some exisitng footage in Final Cut Pro and later on began filming our own footage to a given song. The most challenging part of this task was trying to create smooth cuts inbetween shots in the editing.
